FAQ's

Yes, my job and what I do can seem to be magic, allusive and a bit voodoo like, so hopefully you can learn the ancient secrets of getting a website built here. Click each FAQ to find out more.

question

What is it you do exactly?

answer

In short, I build websites. I take designs and code them into function websites.

I code/program/develop websites - I take a design for a website and turn it into HTML/CSS so a bowser can interpret the design and then splice the HTML/CSS with a tool, such as wordpress, to make a website theme. This then allows you to manage your own website.

question

I want to create a new website from start to finish - are you the right person to talk to?

answer

Yes!

There are two primary phases to any website - design & development. While I specialize in the later (development) phase, I can provide a designer for us to work with from my network or we can work with your designer (if you have one).

question

Wouldn't it be easier to hire "joe james" who can do design, development & SEO?

answer

Depends - because I take the approach of using people on your project according to their speciality you are most certainly going to get a better end product. Imagine your chef only cooking your meal and not waiting on you and not cleaning up - he will have much more focus on the quality and outcome of your meal.

question

I have an existing site that i need help with - are you the right person to come to?

answer

Yes!

question

Why would i hire a freelancer when i can hire a firm?

answer

Cost - I am on average half the cost of an established brick and mortar web design/development company. I have worked at the firms, so I can offer the same development experience, just at a reduced cost.

question

Why not out-source the work overseas?

answer

I have personally worked on and collaborated on projects with over seas developers as well as fixed quite a few sites that initially were outsourced over seas - what you get is a real good deal, and a partially functional website. Add in the 8-12 hour time zone difference and language barriers and a project can quickly take months longer than one would expect.

question

why do I need to disclose my budget?

answer

Disclosing your project budget up front gives me an idea of what options are available to you. We can use the example of a real estate broker - the cost of a home can range drastically from a small mobile home to a hilltop mansion; disclosing the budget for your home gives the broker a starting point to find you want you want and can afford. Similarly, if I know your budget, I can appropriately offer you solutions according to your budget.

question

Im trying to save money - what are some ideas to help me develop a site with a minimal budget?

answer

Most websites are built on a platform such as Wordpress. These platforms/tools have a number of common features (such as blogging) built in. To keep costs down we develop websites using the features these tools come with - basically we try to re-invent the wheel as little as possible.

For real small budgets, not doing a custom design for your site, and starting with a pre-built website template/theme is a great way to go. Over the past few years the quality of these pre-built themes has soared and can be a great starting place to get a super high quality, low budget website.

question

I am out of the area can we still work together?

answer

Yes! Most of my clients are not local to my area. Thank technology :)

question

Do you charge hourly or a flat rate, are their hidden costs?

answer

In most cases new projects are quoted flat rate based off my hourly rate. If I am taking on an existing website I bill hourly as I am not familiar with the codebase it is hard to predict what you are getting into.

question

Do you offer any satisfaction guarantees?

answer

I offer a 30 day from launch guarantee against bugs/issues with the site operating or displaying in modern browsers. In addition I offer my own personal quality and experience guarantee as I would prefer to have you as a long term client. :)

question

Do you offer any training after the site is finished?

answer

Since each site is built on a tool to mange it, yes, I build into my projects as much training as needed to get you comfortable adding, editing, removeing and updating your websites content and products.

question

Will my website be search engine friendly when your finished with it?

answer

Yes, it will be search engine friendly. Website can be coded in a number of ways - some friendly for search engines and some not. I coded in a way that is ideal for search ending optimization (SEO). Note the difference here, as I do not do SEO work, just build a site in way that is ready to bring in a SEO expert to do his or her magic.

question

Will i be able to edit my own website?

answer

Yes! It will be placed on a content management tool, such as Wordpress, where you will have full control over your websites content, pages, menus and products.

question

What about my email?

answer

If it is a new website I can setup email accounts as needed.

question

What are some things that i should consider about my project before i contact you?

answer

I need to know what you need your website to do for you, what content or products it needs to have, what your timeline is, what your budget is and any specific needs, e.g. "I need my shop to sell gift cards"" or "I need my photo gallery to connect with my Flickr account".

question

Are you available for new projects?

answer

Currently I am. I typically can start new projects in 1-3 weeks.

question

How long do projects take?

answer

This depends on the scope of work. Updates to an existing site can be done in a week, a new basic website can be done in a month, an ecommerce site can be done in 2 months. Conversely, a large ecommerce site with a lot of custom functionality can take 6 months. Once I am familiar with your project I can give you an idea of how long it should take.

question

What do you offer in terms of website maintenance after my site is done?

answer

I will fix bugs and problem free of charge for 30 days. Your website should require minimal maintenance after launch. Maintenance is defined as items that are not issues but not additional features - such as a update is released for the software used and you would like to update. Maintenance and additional features after launch are an additional cost.

question

Who are your typical clients?

answer
